Earth Hour and the future

I hope everyone took part in the all important Earth Hour. Congratulations if you did. It was a little strange sitting by candlelight, it reminded me of hurricane days, ugh, but it was well worth it if it sent a message around the world.

I have been working on several video projects about pandas and can't seem to finish any of them.  I get started on one, doing the research, collecting photos, video and then pop up comes another idea for another project and it just doesn't stop.  I have also been trying new media to incorporate in my videos and that of course that creates a learning curve that slows me down.  In some cases its taking too much time. I also need to upgrade my video software, I feel like it doesn't present me with the creativity that I want to use, so am going to be looking around.

Have you heard about the video cameras that are going without tape?  Awesome.  That's something else I want to get into.  Will need to do alot of research on that also.  2009 is suppose to be a good year for release of these cameras, now to see who does the best job with it. 

Well, we should be seeing signs from Mei Xiang of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and Ya Ya of the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee to see if they are beginning the stages of being pseudo pregnant or pregnant.  Keep your eyes on the cams and updates from the respective zoos.  And of course If I hear or see anything, you will be sure to find it here. 

Earth Hour 2009

Be proactive and take part in EARTH HOUR 2009, coming up this Saturday, March 28, 2009. This is a great opportunity for all of us to send a message to world leaders about how you feel about global warming.

On March 28, 2009, you can VOTE EARTH by switching off your lights for one hour. Or you can vote global warming by leaving your lights on. The results of the election are being presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. The eight - 2 year old pandas that went to the Beijing Zoo, China, as part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics,are now returning home.  They are moving into the Bifengzia Base which is part of the Wolong Reserve in the Sichuan Province and where they have provided new digs for them as part of the reconstruction effort by the state.

Tai's Fwootie Heaven!

If you ever get a chance to go see the pandas at the National Zoo in D.C., its always fun if you can see them with one of their enrichiment items.  They come in many forms but watching them devour the fruitsicles, frozen fruit juices with pieces of fruit is one of my favorites.  Thanks to bob2cleo of flickr for capturing Tai Shan enjoying his even in a little rain shower.

Beijing 'Olympic' pandas returning home

China View reports that those eight adorable 2 year old pandas that took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will be returning to their hometown in southwest China's Sichuan Province this coming Sunday, March 22, 2009. 

"Zhang Jinguo, deputy chief of Beijing Zoo, said the eight bears would leave Beijing's Capital Airport at 11 a.m. Sunday on a flight to the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Bifengxia"

"Zhang Jinguo of the Beijing Zoo added that two months after the eight pandas were flown back, three to six other pandas would be sent from Sichuan to his zoo where pandas would be put on display in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in October"

Atlanta Web cams returning!!!!!

No official word from Zoo Atlanta on their website, but the AJC, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who has been a reliable source in the past, reported yesterday, March 17, 2009, that yes indeed the cams will be back online this coming Friday, March 20, 2009!     Zoo Atlanta live webcam  There is news about the cams coming back on their MySpace blog.

"Regular cam operating hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. “The Panda Cam provides a source — especially during these times — of great relaxation,” said Justin Camerlengo, Earth Cam’s marketing director. Earth Cam will operate the streaming in exchange for promotional opportunities at the zoo.

The two-year deal is worth an estimated $50,000 to $60,000. Panda fan Mara Strock, a resident of Burke, Va., has agreed to cover the cam’s local server costs. “I love giant pandas and missed seeing Xi Lan and family on Panda Cam,” Strock said in a zoo news release"

The Panda Cam has been in operation for more than a decade, but went offline because of belt tightening
